Favorite Churches
- Chiesa di San Pantalon. Pictures don't do this place justice. You must see it. There are many canvasas painted on the ceiling covering it entirely. It's like a mini Sistine Chapel. The artist took 24 years to complete it and as he was finishing he fell from the scaffolding to his death.
- La Basilica di San Marco
- La Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta di Torcello. This is on Torcello, the oldest settlement of Venice, and is an excellent find. It has an enourmous mosaic of the final judgement that is similar to Dante's Divine Comedy, Hell included(you know...people in a lake of fire and sculls with snakes protruding from their eye sockets). Also has a series of paintings that depict the cross bearing and death of Jesus.
- Chiesa di San Giacomo dell'Orio
- Basilica Dei Santi Giovanni e Paolo
- Basilica Santa Maria dei Frari
Favorite Islands
- Torcello. Only 20 inhabitants. Very peaceful.
- San Michele. Cemetary Island. Good place to get away from the crowd.
- Poveglia...while I didn't go there as it's off limits to visitors due to its dark past I still have to put it on the list due to its intrigue.
Favorite Squares
- Campo San Pantalon
- Piazza San Marco
- Campo San Margherita
Favorite Quotes
- Marco che cazzo vuoi!? (What the "F" do you want?) Shouted by a street worker to another as I was passing by. It made the old lady in front of me turn around with the "oh dear" look on her face.
- Gondola Gondola! Heard this many times walking by Gondoliers. Also gets annoying!
Favorite Restaurants
- Oniga
- L'incontro
- La Bitta
Favorite Things to do
- Use the language, whether it was reading signs, ordering food, asking for directions it comes in handy as much as it is fun to use.
- Get a good gelato.
- Sit in the middle of an art exhibit and take it all in.
- Sit down and relax and enjoy the sights around you. After all that walking you'll be wishing you had a nice place to sit down.
